Guide

Translate any screenshot in three moves

Plenty of apps and websites have no built-in translate button. A screenshot gets around that. Because the text on a screen is crisp, it is also one of the most reliable things to translate.

  1. Capture the screen. On a phone, press the usual screenshot buttons. On Windows use Win + Shift + S, and on a Mac use Shift + Command + 4.
  2. Paste or upload. On a computer, press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V) anywhere on this page and the image is picked up automatically. On a phone, tap the upload box and choose it from your gallery.
  3. Translate. Select the languages and press the button.

Where screenshots shine

  • Chats and social posts from friends, groups and comment sections.
  • App screens and error messages that appear only in another language.
  • Web pages that block copy and paste.
  • Game menus and item descriptions in imported titles.
  • Receipts and booking confirmations sent as images.

Tips for cleaner results

Crop the screenshot to the part you care about, since menus, icons and status bars add noise. If the text is tiny, zoom in on the screen before you capture it. Light text on a very dark or patterned background can be missed, so a screenshot taken in a lighter theme sometimes reads better.

Privacy tip

Screenshots can show names, messages and account details. Crop those out before you translate. The image itself is read in your browser, but it is still a good habit.

Need to translate a printed page or a restaurant photo instead? Try the document translator or the menu translator, or go back to the main image to English page.
